The dictionary defines Plastic Surgery as: “Surgery concerned with the repair, restoration or improvement of injured, lost, misshapen or defective body parts”, however today the term is widely associated with the enhancement of the body. Both Reconstructive and Cosmetic surgeries are important in today’s medical science, they provide both life and vanity saving operations. Some people object to the word “plastic” as it can often be considered cheap or fake.
Reconstructive surgery takes the definition as given above. It has been used in the reconstructive sense since at least 2000 BCE originating in India. The name however – Plastic Surgery – originated from the Greek language, using the word Plastikos, which means; Able to be moulded. As early as the 1st century BC the Romans were using Plastic Surgery to fix simple deformities such as damaged ears. In 1827, Dr J P Mettauer introduced Reconstructive plastic surgery to America when he repaired a cleft palate, with operating instruments that he had designed himself.
In modern day society Plastic Surgery is used for a variety of enhancements such as “Breast Enlargements or Breast Reductions”, Cosmetic surgery is largely carried out on women; however there are a growing number of men requesting surgery to enhance or reduce various parts of their bodies. Cosmetic surgery differs from reconstructive surgery, as it is primarily used to improve ones’ features on purely aesthetic level, with no visible deformity or physical trauma.
All in all, plastic surgery has been either great investment or a necessity to many people world over, whether it is an issue of self confidence, or a physical deformity.
