Yes Virginia, some men (or boys) do wear bra; and they’re not necessarily the transvestite type either aiming at breast enlargement. These less fortunate gentlemen are sufferers of a condition called gynecomastia, breast enlargement resulting from the growth of large mammary glands which, needless to say, is an abnormality in males. Although there is no clear cause has been established for this disorder, sex hormone imbalance is generally thought to be the trigger mechanism for male breast enlargement. In newly born infants, for instance, gynecomastia can occur as a result of excessive female hormones from the neonates’ mother. Some manuals on breast enhancement for women in fact advocate estrogen and other hormones, along with exercise, massage and diet for effective bust-lift methods.
Male breast anomaly can also occur among adolescent boys which could be the source of a lot jokes among the young ones’ circle of friends and acquaintances, to the great distress of the juveniles suffering from gynecomastia. Fortunately in most cases, this type of male breast enlargement disappears or shrinks after a couple years. There is a more serious problem, however, if the gynecomastic child is obese.
Higher levels of estrogen has been shown to result from obesity and manifest in male breast enlargement. In one study, three subject prepubescent males who were administered repeated topical applications of products with tea tree oils and lavender extracts developed gynecomastia. The theory is that the products’ ingredients triggered estrogenic activity which led to enlarged breasts. This theory now forms one of the bases for some herbal products now being marketed along with how-to manuals to increase the breast size of less-endowed women, a less-invasive and less-costly procedure compared to cosmetic surgery.
Male adults can also suffer from breast enlargement as a side effect of taking medications or performance-enhancing food supplements resulting in excessive estrogen activity. Stopping the use of these medications or food supplements and changing over to options suggested by a qualified medical practitioner could be enough to solve male problems with breast enlargement. If the gynecomastia persists, surgery breast reduction is an option. But like female breast augmentation through surgical implants, gynecomastic surgery is expensive and is not covered in many health insurance policies on the ground that it is a cosmetic procedure. Hence, many males with enlarged breasts chose to grin and bear it, and live with their condition, wearing a bra. This male contraption is, however, markedly different from the female brassiere, as it is a compression vest. Interestingly, this male bra version is has also been referred to as “mansierre” or “bro”, a word play on its more popular feminine counterpart oftentimes used as a device for breast enlargement.
